ABOUT
Laura Wallbank is from Alberta, Canada, and she has a huge passion for the fiddle. She also teaches lessons online at the moment, has a band, and attends numerous fiddle camps and competitions in her area every year when possible.
Laura has played at numerous venues and events, such as birthday parties, the Fiddler's Roost with Calvin Vollrath, Taste of Edmonton, Westbury Theatre and Citadel Theatre, and many more.
Laura started playing classical violin when she was 11 years old, and has never turned back. Her teacher decided to teach her a few fiddle tunes, and she fell in love! Sadly, she did have to switch teachers since her teacher at the moment wasn't well versed in the fiddle style Laura wanted to pursue.
In 2019, Laura played in a twin harmony category at a local fiddle competition with fellow fiddler Colten Bear, and they won the class! They enjoyed playing together so decided to create a band. Unfortunately, timing wasn't in their best interests as the Covid pandemic started soon after they became a band.
That said, Laura has had many amazing opportunities over these pandemic years to play with other musicians, both virtually and in person. She decided to start a YouTube channel to make some fiddle videos with guests, and it's something she's really enjoyed doing!
In 2020, Laura did virtual collabs with different people, playing tunes already written. In 2021 and now in 2022, she decided to make a new series about co-writing (composing) tunes with her musician friends. Basically how it works, is she would write an A section, send it to them, and they would write the B section. If they had enough time, they would also write an A section of another tune and send it to Laura to finish. She says it's been so much fun to work with everyone and see great tunes come out of it.
Laura now has two albums out as well, they were super fun to work on. The first one is called "Lauratized", there are only physical copies available at this time. And the second is all original tunes called “Resonance, a sound returned”. Resonance is available both digitally and in physical CD format. They are $20 each plus $5 shipping if you need to get it shipped to you.
Laura was honored to be invited to participate in the elite Canadian Grand Masters fiddle competition, online in 2021, and despite many amazing players, got 7th place and a nice check! She is very proud of this accomplishment and can't wait to attend this year in person, as she got invited again. This year it will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
